The Blue Economy

Blue Economy100 innovations. 10 years. 100 million jobs. This is what Gunter Pauli came to share at Santa Barbara City College recently about his work on the book The Blue Economy. Gunter founded ZERI (Zero Emmissions Research & Initiatives) in 1996, and in 2004, he began a five-year research project on these 100 innovations that would create huge shifts in our world. The book was published this year, and they were being offered for sale at SBCC.

Gunter shared why he feels the green economy will not work, and he then stated that "Doing less bad is bad. We have to do more good." He set out to design a competitive business model where sustainability is the capacity to respond to the basic needs of all, with what we have.

His four principles of innovation are:

  1. inspired by how ecosystems work and evolve
  2. first and foremost based on physics
  3. to target blatant models of unsustainable production and consumption
  4. innovations always generate multiple benefits

He offered many examples of these business models, and they are inspiring! Visit his website below to learn more.
